Who We Are

The Probstfield Organic Community Garden is located in Moorhead, Minnesota. The land our garden is on is owned by the Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation, which was established by the descendants of Randolph M. Probstfield. Randolph Probstfield was extremely influential in the early history of this area. An emigrant from Prussia, he was one of the earliest white settlers in the area. He was also influential in building one of the first schools in the area and served a term in the Minnesota State Senate. He purchased this land in 1868. He purchased about 400 acres and a bit over 100 acres remains in the Foundation. Randolph and his large family raised a wide variety of vegetables and produce to sell at their roadside stand. Probstfield loved to experiment with a variety of crops and to try innovative approaches. He was an extensive record keeper and diary keeper, so there is much to be learned about him, his family, the farm, and life at that time.

One of the Foundation's goals is to transform the homestead and land into a living history farm. As gardeners on this historic land, we are proud to be the first part of that dream. We honor the Probstfield family's legacy as we are living history, growing a bounty of food on the land as the Probstfield family once did.

The Organization

The Probstfield Farm Living History Foundation (PFLHF) is lead by the Board of Trustees. The Board oversees the restoration of the farm and all activities on the Foundation land.

The organization of the Probstfield Organic Community Garden (POCG) is provided by a volunteer Garden Coordinator, who reports to the PFLHF Board.
